Three things to try before you pay anyone

Turn the switch off. Look underneath the unit for a hex socket in the centre of the base, and use the small L shaped hex key that came with the disposal, or a quarter inch hex key. Work it back and forth to break the jam free. Then remove whatever caused it, with the power off and never with your hand in the chamber. Turn it back on and it will usually run.
2. If it does nothing at all, find the reset
There is a small red or black reset button on the underside of the unit. Thermal overload trips it, which is what happens after a jam. Press it firmly. Also check the breaker and, in many kitchens, the switch under the sink or on the wall.
3. If the sink backs up while it runs, it is not the disposal
A disposal grinds. It does not create drainage capacity. Water backing up in the sink while the unit runs means the drain line downstream is restricted, which is a drain cleaning question. This distinction matters because replacing a working disposal will not fix it, and people do get sold exactly that.
If it leaks, note where from. A leak at the top mounting ring is usually the sink flange seal. A leak from the body itself means the internal housing has corroded through and the unit needs replacing. Those are very different bills.

The last week of November and the last week of December are the reliable annual peak for kitchen drain and main line blockages across the trade. Verify the licence

- Confirm the classification is C-36. That is the plumbing contractor classification. A general B licence is not the same thing.
- Check the status is active and the expiration date has not passed.
- Check bond and workers compensation on the same record. Licensed, bonded and insured are three separate protections and a company can hold one without the others.
- Read the complaint and disciplinary history shown on the record.
California requires licensed contractors to publish their licence number in every advertisement soliciting work, under Business and Professions Code section 7030.5.
